Description Marc Provitt 2002-09-13 02:50:51 UTC
gentoo-ppc=1.2-r1.iso

G4 Tower
640MB ram
SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic (formerly NCR) 53c896 (rev 7).
(i got two of them)

Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun:00
18GB SEAGATE Model: ST318203LW Rev: 3700

Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 06 Lun: 00
18GB QUANTUM Model: ATLAS10K3_18_WLS Rev:020K

the kernel on the ISO has no sym53c8xx support. I don't have IDE [eww, gross
gross!] drives.. so uhm.. HOSED

needed sym83c5xx i believe.. not there, nor is/was sr_mod or sg_mod..

Not built in kernel, not in /lib/modules/2.4.19-r6/kernel/drivers - nowhere! so sad.

booted all the way to the prompt.. ram drive good.. no drives!! so sad..

wget'd a sym83c5xx.o from a fella named Gerk, and an sr_mod.. neither wanted to
insmod, unresolved symbol nightmare..
modprobe told me i was seeing things..
busybox modprobe told me no such applet [heh, it thinks its java!]

so.. no gentoo fun in SCSI only Mac land..

um, have a yellow dog installation on the same Mac worked fine.

so, brilliant work around [go Gerk, again!], I respun the gentoo-1.2 cd with the
yellowdog stock kernel.. tada! boots with scsi support, sees my drives, and now
i have to figure out this whack mac partition table..

but yea, boot a Mac G4 with all SCSI drives, and a symbios ctrlr.. no worky!

This should be fine in latest ISO kerenl, can you please test?

It's in test kernels at http://gentoo.org/~gerk/

Experimental ppc iso's are in http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/experimental-ppc/
Mr Marc Provit, can you please test them out on your scsi machine and report any
failures (that is if you haven't already done so)? We really need to close this bug for the
1.4 release.
Comment 3 Pieter Van den Abeele (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-12-29 07:18:31 UTC
build into the kernel on all ppc cds starting with the 281202 version. Not sure
if smallercd/smallestcd have support build in. The ppc kernel is monolithic atm,
but we're going to try to have a modular kernel on the livecd as soon as possible.

Guys, I'm using the kernels in both the G3 and the generic PPC livecds, and I don't see support for this card.

Also, gerk is not a gentoo dev anymore, so I can't fetch the kernels on his (not available any more) gentoo dev page.
Comment 5 Alvaro Figueroa (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-22 15:25:27 UTC
For guys like me who need kernels for its G3, try looking at ppckernel.org.
Comment 6 Pieter Van den Abeele (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-10-11 04:31:48 UTC
trance, is this bug still valid for your latest livecd kernel .config?
Comment 7 Lars Weiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-30 04:24:45 UTC
That SCSI-driver is compiled into the 2005.0 LiveCD kernel. Finally closing this bug.
