This is a problem that is all over the forums and I would estimate that it is troubling many many people. But I was unable to find a bug report. It is a very simple problem. "emerge sync" fails, part way through, with the error: rsync error: timeout in data send/receive (code 30) at io.c(153) rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (5651616 bytes received so far) [receiver]rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(359) In my case I have seen this happen half way through, and also even nearly at the end of the sync when it counts the files. I have found that doing an emerge-websync often works, but does not entirely resolve the problem. I have tried many mirrors (rsync.uk.gentoo.org, rsync.europe.gentoo.org, rsync.gentoo.org, rsync.us.gentoo.org and others). My other gentoo box is also behind the same router on the same network connection in my house, and does not display this problem. I have not altered any iptables settings. I have always successfully been able to sync from this network setup in the past. I hope this allows you to rule out any obvious solutions, but if more testing is needed, please feel free to ask. Apologies for the duplicate threads. Ignore the 3rd and 4th ones. A search should reveal other threads on this matter though.
Nothing we can do about this. It's either a problem with rsync or our infrastructure...
