However, pilot-link-0.11.8-r1 compiles fine. Please mark it stable on amd64.

there are some more amd64 specific fixes it seem, so i'm duping this to another bug with some patches. i'm getting conflicting reports whether it works for amd64 or not. 

its best if amd64 folks can test out the fixes in the duped bug and mark stable as appropriate because pilot-link-0.11.8 most likely doesn't compile for amd64.
