Description Christphe ARNAL 2005-01-09 02:21:21 UTC
First, on boot, i should get automatic login with a gnome session !
This one crash and i get back to gdm prompt.
There, i can open a root session but no "normal" user session.
Also, i can't get a terminal via CTRL+ALT+Fn ! The display remains graphical, mouse freeze and strange lines on top !
But keyboard works fine ! Typing "root" + "password" + "reboot" reboots the system !!!
Everything appends since system upgrade to Xorg 6.8.0.r3 and nothing change if i get Xorg 6.8.1.901

Any idea !!!

Other problen, from root, openOffice restarts X !!!

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Login GDM session with user "christ" (group "users"
2.Session start then crash
3.Back to GDM login

Actual Results:

What kernel are you using ? (there are know problems with 2.6.10-mm2)

regards,

Benoit
Comment 4 Guy 2005-01-09 15:28:16 UTC
I'm having the same problem of xorg crashing on non root sessions.

I can open mulitple sessions of KDE-3.3.2 and fluxbox only so long as I open them as root. I can't open any xsessions as a regular user.

This is not a joyful experience.
Comment 5 Guy 2005-01-09 15:29:06 UTC
I forgot to note: I'm using development-sources-2.6.10.
Comment 6 Guy 2005-01-09 20:54:45 UTC
I've tried all the xorg-x11 ebuilds dating back to version 6.7.0-r3. I still can't initiate an xsession for any users other than root.

I did an emerge -uDv world last night which included 150 packages. If someone can give me instructions on how, I can provide the list of packages updated.

I compiled and installed my development-sources-2.6.10 kernel on Dec 29th. I did not emerge any new packages until the evening of Jan 8th. Everything was working fine then. I do not recall which version of xorg-x11 I was running prior to last night's 'emerge world'. The only problem I ran into at the time of 'emerge world' was the gnutls problem. I resolved that by re-emerging libsoup.

All earlier versions of xorg-x11 ebuilds have been deleted by emerge sync.

Some advice would be sincerely appreciated as I this is my main workstation at home and I'm not prepared to intall and run commandline email clients etc.

Just a guess, but I'm beginning to lean towards the idea that there is another package involved in this problem besides the kernel I'm using and xorg-x11.
Comment 7 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-09 20:58:26 UTC
A few easy things to check are permissions:
ls -ld /tmp/.X11-unix /tmp/.ICE-unix /tmp /usr/X11R6/bin/X*

A nice tool for checking emerge times of particular packages is splat. For example, `splat xorg-x11`.

You definitely shouldn't be running ati-drivers together with xorg 6.8, the latest ati release doesn't work with 6.8.
Comment 8 Guy 2005-01-09 21:02:45 UTC
As a test, I booted with my development-sources-2.6.9 kernel compiled on Dec 4.

I still cannot initiate any xsessions for any user other than root.

I do not consider this to be a kernel problem.

Im response to comment #7:

First of all, thank you for responding!

drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 48 Jan 10 00:00 /tmp/.ICE-unix/

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3892788 Jan 9 22:52 /usr/X11R6//bin/Xvfb

I see that Xorg is different, but I don't know if it's supposed to be identical to the others. Also, while I can handle basic permisions {rwx}, I'm not advanced beyond that.

I have no 3rd party drivers loaded. I use only the vesa driver. This is because I use the built in GPU of the Via K400A chipset. It's been working fine till now.

Thank you for pointing out 'splat'. I had to emerge it first though. :-)

Last version of xorg-x11 prior to last night was:

* x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.0-r3

	Emerged at: Wed Nov 17 19:58:38 2004
Build time: 55 minutes, and 54 seconds

I'm guessing I need to change the permissions on Xorg as noted above. Is this correct? And can you give me the exact command{s}? I'd hate to make a permissions mistake through my personal ignorance.

:-)
Comment 10 Guy 2005-01-09 21:38:25 UTC

Comment 12 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-10 09:02:23 UTC
IRT perms: "s" in owner group is suid, in user group is sgid. "t" in the last "x" spot is sticky bit. The chmod man page has some info; so does Google.

In the future, do not paste long output directly into the bug report; attach it. It makes it harder to see what people are actually saying about the problem.

Check the perms on a few more things:
ls -ld /home/$(whoami) /home/$(whoami)/.Xauthority /home/$(whoami)/.ICEauthority

Well, a partial solution !!!

If i remove dri module from xorg.conf, everything works !!!
So, the trouble seem's to be cause by DRI.

I know, it's not fine but it works !!!

By the way, i've change fglrx driver to radeon driver. With this one, DRI is OK.

But the question remains, why did DRI stopped working ?

No idea yet, maybe latter...

Hm, if you want to attach your xorg.conf and list the output of:
ls -ld /dev/dri
ls -l /dev/dri

In response to comment #12:

First, I apologise about the inline post. I actually know better but my mind doesn't work that well after midnight. :-(

The info you requested:

dragonfyre ~ # ls -ld /home/guyc /home/guyc/.Xauthority /home/guyc/.ICEauthority
drwxr-xr-x 167 guyc root 12576 Jan 10 08:27 /home/guyc
-rw------- 1 guyc users 1155 Jan 9 17:48 /home/guyc/.ICEauthority
-rw------- 1 guyc users 4558 Jan 10 08:27 /home/guyc/.Xauthority
dragonfyre ~ # ls -ld /root /root/.Xauthority /root/.ICEauthority
drwx------ 42 root root 4104 Jan 10 21:58 /root
-rw------- 1 root root 394 Jan 10 21:57 /root/.ICEauthority
-rw------- 1 root root 208 Jan 10 08:16 /root/.Xauthority
dragonfyre ~ #

Am I correct in assuming that I should leave the permissions on:

-rws--x--x 1 root root 2002075 Jan 9 22:52 /usr/X11R6//bin/Xorg

alone? Based on the man page for chmod, I understand how to change the suid and sgid bits now. But I don't know if I need to. I did, as an experiment, change the permissions to:

-rwsr-sr-x

but that didn't seem to make any difference.

I'm also attaching my xorg.conf.

emerge and current xorg-x11 version info

relevant 'emerge info' and 'emerge -pv xorg-x11' results.
Comment 19 Guy 2005-01-13 06:30:20 UTC
I've added ipv6 support to all my kernels. The only difference between the root X log and the non-root X logs are:

X log for root:

...
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Keyboard1" (type: KEYBOARD)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse1" (type: MOUSE)
(II) Mouse1: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/local/, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list!
SetClientVersion: 0 8
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(II) Mouse1: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded

X log for non-root:

...
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Keyboard1" (type: KEYBOARD)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse1" (type: MOUSE)
(II) Mouse1: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/local/, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list!

I think it's really, really weird that I got the socket messages for non-root users but not for root when I had no ipv6 support.

I think it's even weirder that I can no longer initiate an X session for any non-root user regardless of kernel and xorg-x11 combination.

This sucks.

Problem solved.

The installation of xorg-x11-6.8.1.809 either installed an empty or nulled out an existing .xinitrc file in the home directory of the non-root user. Removing the empty .xinitrc file resolved the problem. The date and timestamp on the .xinitrc file matches the 'emerge -Udv world' command executed on Jan 8.

Later attempts to go back to earlier versions of xorg-x11 were unsuccessful for because this file was left out there.
Comment 21 Guy 2005-01-13 11:14:33 UTC
I think I meant 901 instead of 809 but I'm not home so I can't check for sure.
Comment 22 Guy 2005-01-15 08:28:58 UTC
Problem found and identified:

Note the following timestamps:

* net-im/ymessenger-1.0.4.1-r1

	Emerged at: Sat Jan 8 02:27:32 2005
	Build time: 56 seconds

-rw-r--r-- 1 guyc users 0 Jan 8 02:29 .xinitrc.hold

ymessenger apparently attempts to update the user's .xinitrc file the first time it is run. This results in a _blank_ .xinitrc. This is wrong. The timing of this whole fiasco is coincidental to the 'emerge world' I performed during the same Xsession.

Presumably, people who 'emerge world' and have an old version of ymessenger will run into the same problem after the new version emerges.

I'm not a programmer, but I suspect that ymessenger should be masked since the problem appears to me to be caused by running ymessenger the first time.

This bug should be closed and a new bug opened for ymessenger.

Nah, I'll just reassign this one.
Comment 24 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-25 11:38:17 UTC
Does this occur for ymessenger-1.0.6.1?

If so I'll just mask the whole lot.
Comment 25 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-23 10:33:14 UTC
Please, test this w/ ymessenger-1.0.6.1 and report back.
