The latest ebuild for ati-drivers, 3.4.16 seems has been set to only work with a specific version of xorg.

shouldn't this be >= instead of <, as it is for xfree. Worked for me on the latest xorg 6.8.1.901.

Well ati-drivers is known to be broken with xorg-x11-6.8.0 

They work for you on 6.8.1.901???

Actually, it didn't. I thaught everything was OK, but something seems jaming it, so i did a downgrade on xorg, and everything was ok. My bad.
