I hacked this together last night. I incorporated all of the bugfixes that I could find, and added some stuff of my own. I am attaching the complete code. //ZhEN

A few suggestions : in << Progressing from stage 1 to stage 2 >> section, as regards the needed time for this step : Now, it's time to start the "bootstrap" process. This process will last 1-2 hours depending on how zippy your machine is; it takes about an hour on my 900Mhz AMD Athlon system. ow, it's time to start the "bootstrap" process. This process will last 2-? hours depending on how zippy your machine is; it takes about three hours on a 1000Mhz amd athlon system. Assuming from the portage tree, I'm not sure the 14 : kernel section is up-to-date, but I do not know enough the different flavours of the kernel to comment. At the opposite : I don't really see the use of the hdparm section in the installation instructions. This part should really be part of another doc, such as the desktop one I think. Tweaking disk parameters is not something I would do in the first steps of installation. The first sentence is rather weird too : Unfortunately, hdparm tweaks such as you performed at the beginning of this installation are not remembered between reboots. I found no mention of hdparm before this. The grub section should be appended perhaps with a little more explanation of the numerotation grub uses. An example should be fine with perhaps such a configuration as a hard-drive and a cd-rom player on the first controller (hard-drive being master) and a second hard-drive on the second controller the /dev descriptors are /dev/hda, /dev/hdb, /dev/hdc but the two hard disks are referred by grub as hd0 and hd1, hd counting only harddrives. One way or the other, this should be explained in the doc. Last thing : I read in the last lines of gentoo 1.2 installation docs : Note: After rebooting, it is a good idea to run the update-modules command to create the /etc/modules.conf file. Instead of modifying this file directly, you should generally make changes to the files in /etc/modules.d. Isn't this step automatically done at each reboot ? (not sure, I just wonder.) Finally, let me add that it is certainly as regards the new 1.4 isos that the installation documentation will have to be edited, as I do hope pppoe, pptp among others won't be forgotten...

Zhen, Have a look at bug 8421 please. Pierre-Henri Jondot
This is long since taken care of, so I am going to close it. All new bug submissions for this should be opened under another bug listing. //ZhEN
