I thought baselayout, once upon a time, installed this file. qpkg -f /etc/passwd reveals that it is, for now, un-owned...
Yep, sasquach and i noticed this last night. passwd has been copied in during stage1 builds for a while now and we weren't sure why. It seems that nothing in portage provides this file currently ( I was sure baselayout at least used to). Not sure if there is reasoning behind it or if it has slipped through the cracks.
Yes, if you two bright sparcs (*g*) checked baselayout, you would see that it is not copied if a ${ROOT}/etc/{passwd,shadow} already exists. Now I know you are going to ask ... "WHY .. are you mad ?!?!?". Answer: if not fully by now, prob halfway on my way to be totally insane :P Anyhow .. real reason: Those who have been with us for a while .. when last did you see a post to gentoo-user or -dev with "I fried my /etc/passwd"? Or shadow for that matter ? I am sorry, but it just too much of a risc to create the backup file. I am open however for replacing it during bootstrap, to be sure to get the latest version, and prob will do it anyhow.
This is fixed, but will still be an issue until #7596 is resolved. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 7596 ***
Yep Az, you are right, that is true as I'm looking at the ._cfg stuff now
closed, dammit
