Same problem like #72210.

After updating and switching to gcc34-x86-2004.2 recently, I wasn't able to emerge -uD world. 

Complains about missing virtual/fam.

Had to add 

virtual/fam   apps-admin/fam 

to /usr/portage/profiles/gcc34-x86-2004.2/virtuals

to get it back working.

Whats the root of the problem?

nothing.. fam virtual is provided in base profile

according to some this is a heisenbug
