Description xv3ctor 2004-11-20 23:22:19 UTC
xkeycaps doesn't include a keyboard layout for the Dell Inspiron 5100. This can be problematic for users new to X11/xmodmap/xkeycaps. According to http://www.jwz.org/xkeycaps/, JWZ is no longer maintaining xkeycaps.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge xkeycaps
2. run xkeycaps
3. no layout for Dell Inspiron 5100s

Actual Results:
no layout for Dell Inspiron 5100s

Expected Results:
well, i don't expect a layout for every keyboard i own, but it would be nice! ;)

add support for the Dell Inspiron 5100

This patch adds support to the xkeycaps ebuild for the Dell Inspiron 5100
keyboard. It bumps the keywords to ~'s.

forgot to mention that this patch depends on my patch in bug # 70318

That's really something upstream should handle, we can't add new keyboard layouts for every keyboard someone might have in the future.

If there is no more upstream, we should consider removing this package completely.

Like i mentioned in the original bug, JWZ is no longer maintaining xkeycaps. If vendors are going to distribute non-supported software, then they should be prepared to support it. Especially when the userbase provides patches. Otherwise don't distribute the software.

we are not a vendor. we do not sell gentoo: we provide it as a free (beer,
freedom) service. if you want this problem to be fixed, put your ebuild in an
overlay and use it from there... there seems to be little interest (notice the
lack of replied and CC list)

sorry, but this is a WONTFIX (still)

btw, i have a dell inspiron 1100, which has the same layout. i can personally
assure you that this patch is totally unnecessary. my girlfriend has a 5100, and
it is also unnecessary for her (in case you doubted the truthfullness of the
first claim)
