libaom v1.0.0 from year 2018 is very slow, especially for encoding. Current git version is significantly improved but the developers keep version number 1.0.0 and adding various tags like: v1.0.0-errata1 v1.0.0-errata1-avif The version "v1.0.0-errata1-avif" or newer is needed for libavif: https://bugs.gentoo.org/711022 "This tag does not indicate or imply any change to AV1 bitstream or decoding behavior since v1.0.0-errata1, rather it indicates this library can also be used for encoding and decoding AVIF." https://aomedia.googlesource.com/aom/+/refs/tags/v1.0.0-errata1-avif Command how to obtain the AVIF compatible libaom: git clone -b v1.0.0-errata1-avif --depth 1 https://aomedia.googlesource.com/aom It would be good to have this version, so media-libs/libavif will not depend on libaom-9999
