nVidia drivers 6629 doesn't work on old cards like TNT2/Geforce4. When X starts, it shows a black screen, a 1-pixel-height line on the top, and the cursor. The widgets doesn't show. It's possible start the session but there is a lot of garbage. No change in xorg.conf configs works. It's not an agpart/nvagp problem. It's seems to be a driver bug. A lot of people that also have this problem: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=40143&page=1&pp=15 http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=248444&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=tnt2&start=0 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Portage 2.0.51-r3 (default-linux/x86/2004.3, gcc-3.4.3, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.9-nitro3 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.9-nitro3 i686 AMD Athlon(TM) XP1700+ Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 distcc 2.16 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] ccache version 2.3 [enabled] Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r5 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r1 Binutils: sys-devel/binutils-2.14.90.0.8-r1 Headers: sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1 Libtools: sys-devel/libtool-1.5.2-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -mmmx -msse -m3dnow" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -mmmx -msse -m3dnow -frepo" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache distlocks noinfo sandbox sfperms" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage /usr/local/trunk" SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="3dnow 3dnowex X aac aalib acl acpi acpi4linux alsa apache2 apm ared aredmem arts artswrappersuid audiofile avi bcmath bidi bindist bitmap-fonts blender-game bluetooth bonobo bzlib calendar caps cddb cdf cdinstall cdparanoia cdr cdrom chroot clanJavaScript clanVoice cpdflib crypt ctype cups dedicated devfs26 dga dio directfb divx4linux dnd dv dvd dvdr dvdread eep encode erandom escreen esd exif f77 faac faad fam fbcon fbdev ffmpeg fla flac foomaticdb freetype fs ftp fusion gd gdbm ggi gif gimp gimpprint glade glgd glut gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 image imagemagick imlib imlib2 jabber java javascript joystick jp2 jpeg jpeg2k junit kadu-modules kadu-voice kde lcd lcms lesstif lesstiff libcaca libdsk libedit libg++ libwww live lm_sensors lzo lzw lzw-tiff mad matroska mcal mikmod ming mldonkeypango mmx mmx2 mng monkey motif mozilla mpeg msn mysql nas ncurses network nls nocd nptl nvidia offensive oggvorbis oldworld ooo-kde openal opengl oss pam pdflib perl pic png pnp posix povray python qt quicktime readline remote rtc samba sasl scanner sdl silverxp slang slp speex spell sppex sse ssl stencil-buffer svg svga tcltk tcpd tga theora threads tiff truetype truetype-fonts unicode usb v4l v4l2 vhosts videos wmf wxwindows x86 xine xinerama xml xml2 xmms xosd xrandr xscreensaver xsl xv xvid xvmc yv12 zlib linguas_es"
This doesn't appear to be a gentoo specific issue, that nvnews thread documents many different distros having the same problems...
Given the fact that the latest drivers (7000 series) have the same problem (or worse), perhaps masking any release >1.0.6111 would be prudent?
