If you don't have git installed when you try to emerge sway, it dies during configuration. '/var/tmp/portage/gui-wm/sway-1.0/temp/build.log' attached.

Duplicate of #677522

This is a bug of meson-0.48.2. Upgrade meson to 0.49.2 to fix.
