I had the same issue with chromium-65.0.3325.146 after upgrading to ffmpeg-3.4.2-r1. A workaround is to disable opencl use-flag for ffmpeg package.
Indeed, it works with ffmpeg[-opencl]
Perhaps the ffmpeg[opencl] code creates some threads on startup, and the chrome process doesn't like that?
Patrick indicates that the Mesa OpenCL library is being used on his system.
The -opencl fix on ffmpeg worked for me too. Weird.
This same error appeared to me two days ago on 65.0.3325.146. Upgrading to 66.0.3359.66 does not help. There's no difference in using ffmpeg-3.4.2-r1[opencl], ffmpeg-3.4.2-r1[-opencl], ffmpeg-3.4.2 or chromium[-system-ffmpeg]. Strangely, sometimes it will start fine. I currently use `while true; do chromium; done` as a very hacky workaround. Within 5-15 seconds, Chromium will usually launch.
I have also hit this bug with www-client/chromium-66.0.3359.117[system-ffmpeg], media-libs/mesa-18.1.0_rc2 and media-video/ffmpeg-3.4.2-r1[opencl] on "Thames [Radeon HD 7550M/7570M/7650M]". It seems that chromium loading ffmpeg libraries causes them to load the OpenCL Mesa provider, which in turns creates a "radeon_cs:0" thread. Recompiling media-video/ffmpeg without opencl USE flag works around this issue and allows chromium to start successfully.
Downgrading to =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-387.34 (I had =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-396.18-r1 before) completely removes the problem for me. I think, some new version of the nvidia-drivers causes this problem, as it also causes Metro Last Light to be unable to start. Not sure which version exactly introduced this, though. I skipped some versions.
In my case this has happened on AMD graphic card with Mesa so it can't be related only to x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers. Comment 5 also suggests that the original reporter hit this on a Mesa OpenCL implementation.
The suggested workaround of ffmpeg[-opencl], either system or bundled ffmpeg with edited ebuild, doesn't work for me (nvidia user). I use nvidia-drivers-396.24, but I this issue occurred with driver versions at the time of the first incidence of this bug. Through sheer luck I managed to find a workaround that lets me launch chromium 100% of the time, rather than the $ while true; do chromium >/dev/null 2>&1: done which unlike some earlier reporters, manages to launch chromium for me only after several minutes, sometimes even an hour or more, all while stressing disk and CPU, since IsSingleThreaded is subject to a data race that needs luck to exploit. $ __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=0 chromium I wouldn't suggest setting that to 0 globally, as that will affect performance of other programs, but lets you use chromium until this bug is resolved.
