when upgrading to qt 5.9.4 shadows around popup menus (both with oxygen and breeze themes are no more displayed) this occurs using both kde plasma 5.11 and 5.12
Please make sure compositing is enabled in systemsettings.
Please provide at least the minimum required information about your system (emerge --info).
Compositing is enabled. I get shadows around window decorations and also around plasma panel but NOT on QT5 POPUP MENUS. (i.e popup menu that is shown if you right click on an application like dolphin or if you right click on the desktop or if you right clik on a window decoration) (i tried both breeze and oxygen qt5 styles and also to set breeze and oxygen window decorations) I tryed to use opengl 2, opengl 3 and xrender in the compositor settings. If i revert to qt 5.7.1 the shadows on popup windows are back. this is my emerge --info Portage 2.3.19 (python 3.5.4-final-0, default/linux/amd64/17.0/desktop/plasma, gcc-6.4.0, glibc-2.25-r10, Confirmed, although I can't tell you if it was correct before or if it is now - I hadn't even noticed the difference yet.
It's strange.. In the plasma 5.12 introduction video the shadows on the qt5 popups are present and i suppose they use qt 5.9 for plasma 5.12 because it is a requirement. https://www.kde.org/announcements/plasma-5.12.2.php
It seems this bug is caused at build-time, not runtime. The shadows were OK after Qt upgrade, but broke when I rebuilt kde-plasma/oxygen. Restoring just /usr/lib64/qt5/plugins/styles/oxygen.so from backups was enough to fix it. Downgrading to Qt 5.7, rebuilding kde-plasma/oxygen and then upgrading back to Qt 5.9 fixes the shadows too.
Yes i can confirm this.
This bug is by the way not present in Plasma Wayland sessions - only when in X.
the bug is still present with qt 5.11.1 and kde-plasma-5.13
I decided to look at it, instead of waiting for someone else to fix it :) The problem is that ShadowHelper::installX11Shadows function does nothing, because for some reason QT_NO_XRENDER is set, even though Qt is build with Xrender. If I remove the check and rebuild Oxygen, shadows work again. However, the real cause must be somewhere else, my guess is that either qtgui ebuild should set QT_XRENDER, or the XRENDER flag has to be removed from qtcore ebuild.

FYI, the bug will only be gone after rebuild of breeze/oxygen.

Subsequent versions of Qt and Plasma are (being) stabilised.
