Description Joe McCann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-20 14:21:34 UTC
small request to add the following to the post install einfo of gnome-nettool:

einfo "The following tools are not required to install gnome-nettool"
einfo "But are necessary if you want to use all of its functions"
	einfo "For Device configuration: app-admin/gnome-system-tools"
	einfo "For Ping: net-misc/iputils"
	einfo "For Netstat: sys-apps/net-tools"
	einfo "For Traceroute: net-analyzer/traceroute"
	einfo "For Whois: net-misc/whois"
	einfo "For Finger: net-misc/netkit-fingerd"
	einfo "For Lookup: net-dns/bind-tools"
Comment 1 Alastair Tse (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-10 05:37:51 UTC
shouldn't we add those as runtime deps? the tool is pretty useless without those deps anyway?
Comment 2 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-10 08:38:52 UTC
don't you think it's overkill to add all those deps for a tool most users will never touch ?
Comment 3 Alastair Tse (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-16 13:51:53 UTC
then might as well remove it from the gnome meta since no one is going to use it.
Comment 4 Jonathan Hernández Velasco 2004-10-27 06:17:07 UTC
i think it shouldn't be part of gnome meta-package, but rdepend of this applications.
Comment 5 Mike Gardiner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-04 01:20:23 UTC
Is this included in the meta because it's seen as part of the upstream release?

Aside from bind-tools (4meg), these dependencies are a pretty small download requirement, less than 500K for g-s-t and iputils, and less than 100K for the rest.

Either way I we should add them, it's only a question of whether gnome-nettool should be in the meta or not.
Comment 6 Mike Gardiner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-30 18:31:48 UTC
Vote for adding runtime deps and removing from the meta, it's easy enough to install by itself. foser/liqx?
Comment 7 Joe McCann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-30 19:09:14 UTC
Since the package is no longer part of the gnome metabuild, I vote for adding these as runtime deps. As obz said, most of them are pretty small.

The only people going out of their way to install this package are people who want a front end for these utils, or people being told to install it as an instruction from somebody trying to help troubleshoot. If a user is getting support from somebody, and then is shown an error message that says command not found, it defeats the purpose of the application.

We need arm, hppa and ia64 keywording before we can continue.

DEPEND.bad 3
   net-analyzer/gnome-nettool/gnome-nettool-0.99.3-r1.ebuild: ~arm ['net-misc/netkit-fingerd']
   net-analyzer/gnome-nettool/gnome-nettool-0.99.3-r1.ebuild: ~hppa ['net-analyzer/traceroute', 'net-misc/netkit-fingerd']
   net-analyzer/gnome-nettool/gnome-nettool-0.99.3-r1.ebuild: ~ia64 ['net-analyzer/traceroute', 'net-misc/netkit-fingerd']
  RDEPEND.bad 3
   net-analyzer/gnome-nettool/gnome-nettool-0.99.3-r1.ebuild: ~arm ['net-misc/netkit-fingerd']
   net-analyzer/gnome-nettool/gnome-nettool-0.99.3-r1.ebuild: ~hppa ['net-analyzer/traceroute', 'net-misc/netkit-fingerd']
   net-analyzer/gnome-nettool/gnome-nettool-0.99.3-r1.ebuild: ~ia64 ['net-analyzer/traceroute', 'net-misc/netkit-fingerd']

I fixed the ia64/hppa deps with SpankY's help, done.
