Its gnome support makes it require really old and dead gnome2 libraries that we should kill as soon as possible, hence, it will be better to disable its optional gnome support
Debian have a patch to reduce libgnomeui usage to applets, which can then be disabled via --disable-gnome-applet.
They also have other patches that may or may not be interesting.
