I've got the same problem on "xorg-x11 6.8.0-r1".
Having just emerged xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1, I found a couple of problems with fonts: The b&h lucida* iso-8859-* fonts are *missing* from the 75/100 dpi bitmap fonts, the fonts.alias files in those directories are consequently wrong and apps like emacs which don't seem to like the remaining iso-10646 lucida fonts don't work properly. I saw the same messages during the emerge as already reported (not sure that they're very important though?), but I also saw a couple of segfaults and when I run mkfontdir manually in /usr/share/fonts/default/ghostscript/ it does indeed segfault. (I haven't found the other directory it segfaulted in yet).
Please file separate bugs for separate issues. It's nearly impossible to track things when they're all jumbled together in one bug. gnu-gs-fonts-other are known to be screwed up.
confirmed to still be here (the errors "Creating fonts.scale files") with latest version of everything : media-fonts/freefonts 0.10-r2 media-libs/fontconfig 2.2.3 media-libs/freetype 2.1.9-r1 x11-base/xorg-x11 6.8.1.904 (internal rev 1.5)
