Description Michael 'veremitz' Everitt 2017-12-15 00:44:23 UTC
In order to broaden the set of 'stable' kernels available to Gentoo users, it would be nice to see if the aufs-patched kernels that use already-stabilised gentoo-sources kernel versions, could also be stabilised, subject to there being no issues with the aufs patchset.

Currently I can see the following versions present in both gentoo-sources and aufs-sources which could, potentially, be stabilised:
- 4.4.87-r1
- 4.9.49-r1
- 4.12.12

Also, there are quite a few versions in aufs-sources that have been dropped from the gentoo-sources list. I won't list them here now.

I'm happily using the aufs4 separate ebuild, but having to remember to rebuild the aufs module separate to the kernel, in addition to virtualbox-modules is starting to get wearing!!

We tried it in the past, but the arch teams simple didn't stabilize in a timely fashion.

@kernel, what do you think?
Comment 2 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2017-12-16 19:33:38 UTC
My opinion, these should not be tied together. It's not just the patchset that is stabilized but the patchset + kernel.

The aufs provides a different patchset and therefore, I think, should be stabilized separately. And I certainly don't want to ask for ausfs+gentoo-sources stabilization at the same time.

I will never get things stabilized.

My thinking was to use Mike's commit/stable 'lead' on this, and perhaps share a bit of the admin burden, so that there was a rough parity in status between the two pairs of sources. The way I see it potentially working, is as follows:
- Mike/Alice commit a new patch/release to gentoo-sources-X.Y
- This triggers a corresponding patch/release to aufs-sources-X.Y
- Mike triggers stabilisation on gentoo-sources-X.Y.Z
- This triggers a request for aufs-sources.
+ perhaps we can do some of this with a bugzie or email hooks? stablebot even?

Obviously there will be a lag between these events all happening, and perhaps a spot of automation would make it less human-heavy .. but does that clarify my idea a little?

There is potential now to leverage the kernel-CI buildbot to have a 'job' to patch the aufs sources on top, or whatever Justin needs to do for this.

Perhaps we could have a chat about how best this might be accomplished in #g-kernel on IRC .. does that work? I'm game to do some legwork, as I'm helping Alice with the buildbot already.

Thanks for the explanation. That does seem reasonable.
Comment 5 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2017-12-25 21:33:39 UTC
Hi Micheal

I tried before and the arch team are not stabilising kernel packages fast enough. I would rather stay aligned with the main gentoo-sources in terms of version available and not having stable versions than chasing up arch teams to do their work.

I hear you on that .. will see if I can lubricate the wheels any.
