Description Mark Clegg 2004-08-27 12:45:37 UTC
When viewing certain websites, konqueror (kde 3.2.3) takes forever to render the page when using gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8 (-r1 and -r3) kernel. Normal fast response is returned when running on gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7

Sample websites:
http://www.play.com
http://www.ntl-isp.ntl.com/ServiceStatus/

I have googled some docs relating this to IPV6 DNS queries, but have tried the suggested "KDE_NO_IPV6=true" setting in /etc/env.d/99kde-env to no avail.

Ongoing tests and user comments are in the discussion forums at...
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=214355

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Boot under 2.6.8 kernel
2.Load webpage that demonstrates fault
3.

Actual Results:
Page takes several minutes to load.

Expected Results:
Under 2.6.7 page loads in 1 second.

Appears to be related to change in tcp_window_scaling behaviour between 2.6.7 and 2.6.8

Setting /proc/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling to 0 resolves the issue.

Comment 2 Gregg Casillo 2004-08-30 17:03:39 UTC
Setting tcp_window_scaling to "0" does NOT fix the problem for me. I am running KDE 3.3.0 with 2.6.7-r13 at the moment. This problem first appeared last night, and I was running 2.6.7-r11 then. I hoped an update to 2.6.7-r13 would help, but I was wrong. I am reluctant to update to 2.6.8 at the moment for other reasons. Checking mail or web browsing takes 30-60 seconds to complete (for each page) when they used to be instantaneous. Mozilla Firefox exhibits the same problem.

Portage 2.0.50-r10 (default-x86-2004.0, gcc-3.3.4, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r0, 2.6.7-gentoo-r13)

Also FWIW, I can browse sites in lynx without problems (the 30-60 second delay) that I see in Konqueror or Mozilla.
Comment 4 Gregg Casillo 2004-08-31 03:03:57 UTC
Mozilla Firefox is fine. I spoke too soon. For more details on my troubleshooting session last night, read this thread:

Comment 5 Mark Clegg 2004-09-18 10:09:19 UTC
According to http://lwn.net/Articles/92727/, the bug isn't in the kernel, it's down to broken routers on the internet. Setting the default window scale factor is the recommended solution for the time being.

Thanks to Gustavo Barron for pointing out the above article.
