Description Gabriel D'Ambrosio 2017-05-17 02:21:34 UTC
I have installed initramfs from genkernel, but not initialize.

Says the message: "Invalid Units Specification".

I use: genkernel-3.5.0.8 / Linux Kernel 4.11.1 / UEFI / Luks + LVM2.

Before this reporting, I noticed that there are several people going through this, and many adopting alternative like dracut and honestly I don't like dracut.
Comment 1 Knut Masanetz 2017-05-17 05:59:43 UTC
Compiled gentoo-sources-4.11.1 with genkernel-3.5.0.8

Using the same kernel- and genkernel configs, the system booted when at buildtime lvm2-2.02.166-r2. With lvm2-2.02.171 at buildtime the system did not start.

LVM-version at boot-/runtime does not change anything.

Problems checked on amd64 with bios/gpt lvm on single disk and lvm on mdraid.

I guess differences in included parts within genkernel initrd.

Will attach working / non-working initrds later.
Comment 2 Amadeusz Żołnowski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2017-05-17 06:12:27 UTC
lvm2-2.02.171 failed with sys-kernel/dracut as well - with and without lvmetad. I have also a problem initializing another volume group on already booted system (when I have worked around the problem).
Comment 3 Knut Masanetz 2017-05-17 08:03:57 UTC
Another installation on x86...

Adding kernel-config, /etc/default/grub, grub.cfg and genkernel.conf...
Can't add initramfs-files as these are too big.

Em my test dracut is working perfect. All packages are ~amd64.
Comment 9 Mike Benson 2017-05-19 06:23:03 UTC
After a great deal of trial and error inside the failure shell, I think I have tracked down the immediate problem.

At least on my initrd, the (supposedly default) setting for global/units in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf was "r".

When I manually changed this to "h", I could run a vgscan+vgchange+vgmknodes sequence to get my logical volumes.

This isn't a fix though, as the lvm.conf on my root /etc also has this setting of global/units to "r" (and works just fine, now the system is booted).

I'm still digging, but wondering if this might put someone on the right track...
Comment 10 Knut Masanetz 2017-05-19 12:28:56 UTC
The default for global/units switched from "h" to "r" with the update to 171.

On 166-r2 (and older, I think)
"pvs --units r" leads to "Invalid units specification"...

On 171 it works.

As the genkernel initramfs uses lvm2-2.02.88 with a copy of the local /etc/lvm/lvm.conf the lvmtools in the initramfs do not know the "--units r" parameter.

After switching "global/units" to "h" in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf and rebuilding the genkernel initramfs the system boots even with lvm2-2.02.171 at buildtime...

So it's the new value "r" for global/units from 171 which breaks booting with older lvs-versions.

Please re-open if you are still able to reproduce with genkernel-4.0.9 or later.
