It seems that mail-client/thunderbird[crypt] pulls in x11-plugins/enigmail but fails to find it during runtime: Enigmail is not listed under Add-Ons. Is there something I can do as a user to make it find local enigmail? Applies to both 45.8.0 and 52.1.0. Thanks, Sebastian
Confirmed, it doesn't seem to want to work for me either; didn't notice this until you posted. Enigmail's metadata itself actually lists the maximum compatible version as 51.0.something, although I'm not sure if that's accurate or not it may make sense as to why it's not loading for 52.x ; 45.8 however should work, ASSUMING all of the /usr/share/enigmail/ files aren't being eaten on-disk (which I have also seen occur myself once, and there are a couple of other bugs filed about this too). I'm looking into it, will get it fixed asap.

Just use a sed in the enigmail ebuild to support 52.x no need for anything fancy on that front. Far as rest goes I will look at in a few days after I migrate the system to Houston area.
