I usually bump new versions as soon as I recognize them. Unfortunately upstream is enforcing very annoying advertising and donation reuqests since 17.x versions which I do not want to pester our users with. I already patched this advertisement crap away[1] but I'm afraid that such a patch is nothing that should be maintained in Gentoo. Version 17.9.0 has been release on August 30, 2017 http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/ru/changes As for problem with advertising and donation reuqests them were much early even in 2013: https://forum.smplayer.info/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6722 And for smplayer-16.11 that is in portage tree I saw recently such reminder only once (does it suppressed by patch?). And the "count" entry in [reminder] section of smplayer.ini file changes after every launch of player but popup doesn't appear. On Windows I use version 17.4 and I don't remember that I saw such popup.
Also current portage-tree version of smplayer-16.11 seems to be broken subtitle language autodetection when using mpv-0.25.0. I just rename smplayer-16.11.0.ebuild to smplayer-17.9.0.ebuild and merge it. Clear smplayer config and run it. I don't see any popups yet. And more important that with it subtitle language autodetection works with mpv-0.25.0 now.
Sorry, I rechecked behaviour of smplayer with mpv backend. In both smplayer 16.11 and 17.9 subtitle codepage autodection works similar way. The workaround for me is to set the default codepage as non-UTF8 (cp1251 in my case) and don't check audetect checkbox. Then sub with non-utf8 will display and sub with utf8 codepage is always displayed correctly. If I set default codepage as utf8, then the non-utf8 sub is displaying wrong and with checked autodetection language it isn't displaying at all.
Note that audio normalization with recent mpv is broken for <smplayer-17.8.0. I haven't dig through the code, but the patch from Polynomical-c's overlay seems to work fine. I don't see why not to push the new version into the tree...
As previous poster has noted, the volume normalization does not work in smplayer. This feature is essential for me. Currently there will be no audio at all if volume normalization is enabled, wasting my time trying to figure out why the audio was now broken. I'm hoping we can get the version bumped soon. Thanks.
Version 17.10.0 has been release on September 30, 2017 http://blog.smplayer.info/linux-users-may-need-to-update-mpv-in-order-to-use-smplayer-17-10/ New Linux version may need to update media-video/mpv to be compatible with new smplayer 17.10 due to stop of using some deprecated filters and using new ones.
