this's affecting thunderbird as well ,I have the ssl flag in make.conf, and rebuilt the system. Also put a use flag into package.use for dev-lang/python. rebuilt python which pulled in 3.5 but did not rebuild 27 or 34. still no joy.

OK the cure in my case was to put individual ssl statements in to package.use for each version on my system. Then rebuild all versions. Firefox is now building & I suspect that thunderbird will also. But as to the question as why the ssl flag wasn't called for each version remains a mystery.
