Same problem with guile-2.0.14?

Just sync'd portage. Yes same problem with guile-2.0.14

guile-2.0.14_build.log

Same error as in guile-2.0.13-r1

Jason, are you using gcc-6.3.0 by chance?

Error message looks like gcc ICE: https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=71020

This machine is using GCC-4.9.4. Going for stability. Wasn't planning on changing the system compiler. If the bug is documented in gcc6 will the patch push down to gcc4? Guile-1.8 marked stable still compiles clean for me.

gcc-4.9 branch is not supported upstream anymore thus
I would not expect that particular fix to arrive in Gentoo gcc at all:
    https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2016-07/msg00084.html

I've noticed you are using -Os and -march=native on AMD CPU which
I guess matches to -march=bdver2 on gcc-4.9 (and -march=bdver3 on newer gcc)
on your machine.

What you see might also be a different backend-specific gcc bug which
could or could not yet be fixed upstream.

I can't reproduce the error on Intel CPUs with -march=native: things just work
for me.

I also can't reproduce the error on Intel CPUs with -march=bdver3
as gcc inserts instructions my CPU does not understand.

You can try to workaround the issue by trying a few things:
- try CFLAGS="-O2" (and/or -Os) without -match=native
- try newer gcc-5.4.0

If you are planning to extract minimal example for gcc from original failure
    dev-util/creduce (https://embed.cs.utah.edu/creduce/)
might help you to trim original file down.

vm.i.gz

I've applied -march=bdver2 only to the same file you had crash on
and got the same failure \o/. Now we have something reproducible:

$ LANG=C gcc-4.9.3 -march=bdver2 -O1 -c vm.i -o vm.o

Unable to coalesce ssa_names 48 and 3300 which are marked as MUST COALESCE.
sp_48(ab) and  sp_3300(ab)

vm.i

I've shrunk the example with c-reduce down to the following file:

    *a;
    b() {
      char *c;
      static d;
      e();
      d = c++;
      f();
      _setjmp();
      goto *a[*c];
    }

Both gcc-5.4.0 and gcc-6.3.0 do not fail on shrunk example.

$ LANG=C gcc-4.9.4 -march=bdver2 -O1 -c vm.i -o vm.o
Unable to coalesce ssa_names 2 and 9 which are marked as MUST COALESCE.
c_2(ab) and  c_9(ab)

The minimal example also fails on '-O -ftree-vectorize':

    $ gcc-4.9.4 -O -ftree-vectorize -c vm.i
    Unable to coalesce ssa_names 2 and 9 which are marked as MUST COALESCE.
c_2(ab) and  c_9(ab)

    https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=57584

dealt with a similar case: ICE on guile with '-O -ftree-vectorize'.

Handing over to toolchain@.
Comment 12 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2017-03-07 03:54:41 UTC
if the fixes upstream are small and backport cleanly, we can add them to our 4.9.4 patchset. but if they're invasive, or don't apply cleanly, we'll just let it sit and tell people to use gcc-5+.
Comment 13 Maciej S. Szmigiero 2017-08-04 23:19:36 UTC
I have also hit this bug.

Looks like buildroot project had prepared a workaround patch for guile:
https://github.com/buildroot/buildroot/blob/master/package/guile/0003-workaround-ice-ssa-corruption.patch .

With this patch applied I was able to successfully build guile with Gentoo's gcc 4.9.4 (which had previously ICE'ed).

@slyfox: do you want to file an upstream bug?

probably only makes sense if it can be reproduced with later versions...

I don't think there is much value in it. 4.9 branch is not supported any more.

My guess it's fixed (at least partially) in https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=57584

And I did not manage to reproduce it in version other than 4.9.*.
Both gcc-5.4.0 and gcc-6.3.0 do not fail on shrunk example thus
I suspect it's not an issue any more (or at least not the same issue).
Comment 16 Sergei Trofimovich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2018-04-15 18:05:15 UTC
Let's close the bug as obsolete as all affected gcc versions are masked in ::gentoo.
