Description Martin Mokrejš 2017-02-18 13:27:36 UTC
  I am continually hitting issues with layman on new Gentoo::RAP installations where I need science overlay.

$ emerge -pv layman

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] app-portage/layman-2.4.2::gentoo  USE="git sqlite -bazaar -cvs -darcs -g-sorcery -gpg -mercurial -squashfs -subversion -sync-plugin-portage {-test}" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 python3_4 -pypy -python3_5" 0 KiB

$ layman -a science -v

 * Adding overlay...
 * Repository 'science' was already installed

 * CLI: Errors occurred processing action add
 * Repository 'science' was already installed

Could the above be more verbose and tell what config files it poked over?

$ cat /apps/gentoo/etc/portage/repos.conf
main-repo = gentoo
eclass-overrides = rap

location = /apps/gentoo/usr/portage
sync-type = rsync
sync-uri = rsync://

location = /apps/gentoo/usr/portage-stage
sync-type = git
sync-uri =
auto-sync = no

$ ls -latr /apps/gentoo/etc/portage/repos.conf/
ls: cannot access '/apps/gentoo/etc/portage/repos.conf/': Not a directory

I am not in the position to ask for dropping the idea that repos.conf is now a directory but feel free to reconsider it now. I know I am not the only one who h finds this confusing.

Either way, I cannot add any overlays on a freshly installed Gentoo installation and layman-2.4.2::gentoo should do this transition for me automatically.

Comment 1 Brian Dolbec gentoo-dev 2017-02-18 17:27:23 UTC
Layman does not support repos.conf as a single file. It must be a directory since layman only ever modifies it's own file in that repos.conf directory.

I was sure we had code in layman that bitched about repos.conf as a file not a directory.

Your only alternative for the moment is to try switching the config type to the old make.conf type in layman.cfg. But that is deprecated functionality that will eventually disappear in portage.
Comment 2 Martin Mokrejš 2017-02-18 17:37:10 UTC
Well, I dropped the repos.conf file and copied from a working host repos.conf/ contents. I conclude the file repos.conf is included in Gentoo::RAP sources (CCing Benda).

However, it would be helpful as I initially reported, to improve message in verbose mode, showing which files&dirs layman was looking for, and either found or not.
