I started noticing this on a few installs this week and finally got around to investigating. Looks like the breaking behaviour came in 1.2.9, so its possible its a yet-to-be-identified regression in zlib. Or it fixed a subtle problem in sizes of things, which perl was subtly dependent upon in the tests. Things like this seem like they could be relevant: - Assure that gzoffset() is correct when appending But now I've narrowed down where it is, I just have to work out why I can't reproduce it under perlbrew.

The fix is proving problematic, so may just temporarily remove support for deflateParams if I don't get it sorted soon. --- This falls into the "Eeeeek.... !" category... :/
