compiles fine when switching to gcc 3.3.4, so I conclude it's and gcc 3.4.(1) issue...

If you can please try with a recent version, as 1.5.5-r1 seems quite old also if it's marked stable (and fixing such a problem would anyway drop stable keyword, so...)

not experiencing the problem anymore with recent version (quicktime4linux-2.0.4)
