Steps to reproduce:

1. emerge >=sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.7.2
2. Set CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS=y in the kernel .config
3. emerge =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-370.23
4. Smash the monitor when nvidia-drivers doesn't compile.

The fix is to set CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS=n.  The ebuild for nvidia-drivers should warn the user if this kernel config is set.
