I have 2 sound cards (really 3, but Realtek on motherboard is disabled in BIOS): Sound Blaster Audigy SE on PCI (CA0106) and Asus Xonar U1 on USB. On mate-media-1.8.0 volume applet works nearly great (sometimes dissapear and I kill and start it manually), but after update to 1.10.1 every time I log into mate I got X next to speaker and microphone. I can't change volume by scrolling, but I can go to sound preference (right click and last option) and set everything. To fix it I must kill mate-volume-control-applet and start in manually.

Can you attach a screenshot? I am not really undertanding what you mean about what you see. Also, anything worth noting in ~/.xsession-errors?

Does alsamixer list the cards as muted?

Can you dump aplay -l?

Looks like you are using pulse. What happens if you adjust things with pavucontrol instead?

By the way, those "X" marks are just the icon for muted. So, the issue like like it might be related your sound cards/setup.

Alsamixer see only PulseAudio.

> Can you dump aplay -l?
aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...

Pavucontol work fine.

I just found I don't have /proc/asound, but sound work fine.
