Description toon 2016-07-31 11:35:30 UTC
Today, after updating my server, emerge --depclean wanted to remove python-updater.
This server is updated every week. The last update was a week ago.
The server has been running for 6 straight years. This never happened before.
Has python-updater become obsolete?
I can't find anything about it on the net, except one old article on the Funtoo website:
http://www.funtoo.org/News:Python_Updater_Deprecation

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge --sync
2. emerge -uDN world
3. etc-update
4. python-updater && perl-cleaner --all && revdep-rebuild
5. emerge --depclean -p

 * Always study the list of packages to be cleaned for any obvious
 * mistakes. Packages that are part of the world set will always
 * be kept. They can be manually added to this set with
 * `emerge --noreplace <atom>`. Packages that are listed in
 * package.provided (see portage(5)) will be removed by
 * depclean, even if they are part of the world set.
 *
 * As a safety measure, depclean will not remove any packages
 * unless *all* required dependencies have been resolved. As a
 * consequence of this, it often becomes necessary to run
 * `emerge --update --newuse --deep @world` prior to depclean.

Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> Calculating removal order...

>>> These are the packages that would be unmerged:

 app-admin/python-updater
    selected: 0.14
   protected: none
     omitted: none

All selected packages: =app-admin/python-updater-0.14

>>> 'Selected' packages are slated for removal.
>>> 'Protected' and 'omitted' packages will not be removed.

Packages installed: 460
Packages in world: 60
Packages in system: 44
Required packages: 459
Number to remove: 1
Actual Results:
python-updater would be removed.

Expected Results:
python-updater would NOT be removed.

Comment 1 Michael Orlitzky gentoo-dev 2016-07-31 13:39:43 UTC
So, first of all, "emerge --depclean" doesn't care about which packages are deprecated or obsolete or whatever. It simply tries to remove anything that isn't explicitly needed by some other package on your system. In this case, it wants to remove python-updater, not because it's obsolete (although it is), but because it's no longer a dependency of dev-lang/python. It looks like the python team finally removed python-updater as a dependency of python itself yesterday:

  commit b7a4174e075a922a255c0ff4a6ebd4f6d0437c61
  Author: Michał Górny <mgorny@gentoo.org>
  Date: Sat Jul 30 21:07:29 2016 +0200

    dev-lang/python: Remove remnants of python-updater

Remove the remaining dependencies on deprecated python-updater,
and update the postinst messages appropriately. For Python 2.7,
the message has been removed altogether since it is the oldest version
supported by PYTHON_TARGETS. For the remaining versions, just inform
    about potential PYTHON_TARGETS changes necessary.

The modified versions are not revision-bumped to avoid unnecessary
rebuilds due to a minor change. The versions that are still
newest-visible (i.e. not replaced by another version or revision bump)
will be bumped when python-updater is lastrited.

I'll let the python team respond, but I expect everything is going according to plan.

It's obsolete for a long time (pretty much since PYTHON_TARGETS become widespread), full of bugs and pretty much useless these days. It will be masked for removal soon. However, we are giving people a few more weeks to get it cleaned out of their systems to avoid any potential issues.
