chromium-52.0.2743.82 emerged fine chromium starts fine, brings up the menu fine, and exits fine, but any url results in no page being displayed, including internal pages (i.e., Settings) and hitting the new tab button, all bring up an 'Aw Snap! Something went wrong while displaying this web page.' page, which shows the url as 'https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95669?p=e_awsnap_rl&rd=1'. 'https://support.google.com/' brings up the 'Aw Snap!' page, but does NOT change the address. ditto for 'https://www.google.com/' using 'https://www.mozilla.org/' brings up an 'Aw Snap!' page, but does NOT change the address. inet search showed that possibly starting with '--no-sandbox' might work, but resulted in no changes for me. Reproducible: Always

an additional add to that last comment by me... chromium has not been running since I initially started this thread.
eventually, the system beeps and msgs went from every twenty minutes or so, to continuous, logged out and backin, nothing since. I installed this gentoo system on an SSD and the smallish size of /tmp is part of the gentoo install to avoid portage writes burning up SSD writes over time. This is going to take a rethink. Ideas? Thank you for your help.
Sorry, but there's not much we can look at if you can't compile a debug build. You could try setting PORTAGE_TMPDIR to a path on a larger filesystem. A 64 GB USB flash drive should be large enough if you don't want to incur writes on your SSD. Another idea: can you reproduce the problem in www-client/google-chrome? If so, you should be able to get a crash ID and report a bug uptream (https://crbug.com/).

so, generally, over the years chromium has pretty much "just worked", though I really only use it only for accessing and working with my various google accounts and apps... so this was all a bit out of character... before jumping into the whole PORTAGE_TMPDIR thing, I thought I'd do an update @world, which I did with the same environment as before (no make.conf changes that have been suggested in this thread), and now, chromium-52.0.2743.82 works normally. hmmm... sorry, not really helpful, blah, blah, blah I'm going to call it "case closed." thank you for your help and suggestions, I appreciate it.
