Ok I have just installed dev-python/virtualenv but configure still falls over ,unable to create virtualenv.

As an addition thunderbird is falling over with the exact same fault

What USE flags is your dev-lang/python:2.7 built with?

gdbm ipv6 ncurses readline sqlite ssl threads wide-unicode xml

Try rebuilding openssl and python:2.7 with USE='-bindist ssl'.

That suggestion has appeared to work ok,I have made ssl as a global use rather than individual
