Description Richard Scott 2004-07-26 15:59:11 UTC
I get to a failed busy box when booting on anything less that a P3-600Mhz

I've tried booting on a Celeron and a PII and both fail, however a P4 and an AMD XP 2000 work fine.

Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot from 2004.2 Universal CD in either a Celeron or a PII
Actual Results:
...usual boot messages
...
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/ide/cd/c0b1t0u0
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/ide/cd/c0b1t0u0

This is where the busybox starts up and the booting stops.

Expected Results:
to boot into the LiveCD as per 2004.1 etc

Hi... would you care to be a little bit more forthcoming with the information? I have booted the CD personally on a Pentium 3 laptop, a Pentium 2 Dell machine, a Pentium 166 HP machine, and several higher-end machines.

What kind of controller is that CDROM attached to? Those device names are *very* strange.
Comment 2 Richard Scott 2004-07-27 05:24:03 UTC
Hi,

ok, the controller is the onboard controller on machines 1 - 3 below is listed as the following in the output of lspci:

IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE (rev 01)

The general spec of the machines are as follows:

1: Dell Optiplex G1 - PII fails to boot fully.
2: Gateway Solo PIII laptop that boots fine.
3: Custom built celeron 600Mhz that fails to boot fully.
4: Del Optiplex GX260 P4 is all ok.

All of the machines are my test machines for installing Gentoo on. I have had no trouble with any of them booting the LiveCD's until the 2004.2 release :-(

Strange... 2 of my test boxes are Dell GX1 and GX110.

A dual p3 with via apollo pro 133a chipset (Abit VP6),
and a p3 celeron, with intel 815 chipset (Abit SA6),
Non will boot from the 2004.2 minimal live CD. Like there was no CD in the drive. In all machines the CD-Rom drives are secondary masters.
The 2004.1 live cd works.

this is one of them:

0000:00:07.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06) (prog-if 8a [Master SecP PriP])
Subsystem: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT8233/A/C/VT8235 PIPC Bus Master IDE
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32
	I/O ports at d000 [size=16]
Capabilities: [c0] Power Management version 2

What error are you getting when it isn't booting? I need specifics, otherwise I can't do anything about it.
