Description fkater 2016-04-04 09:14:38 UTC
IMHO virtual/mailx should be satisfied by opensmptd, too. This package is,
however, not listed in none of the virtual/mailx ebuilds.

As a result, e.g. sys-power/apcupsd pulls in virtual/mailx which in turn pulls
in mail packages like mailx even if opensmtpd is present.

Reproducible: Always

FYI: Still an issue.

Still an issue...

fkater: out of curiosity, how will you read mails if mailx doesn't pull e.g., mailutils? I don't think opensmtpd provides such utilities.

Maybe we can see it the other way round.

apcupsd (which is for the uninterruptable power supplies from APC) is a
package that wants to send out notifications via email.

If virtual/mailx is meant for enabling an OS to send *and* receive mail, then
it shouldn't be pulled in by packages that simply send.

We'd probably require something like virtual/sendmail or so and make apcupsd
depend on that. Especially in the times of IMAP.

I think virtual/mailx is meant for different implementations of standard /bin/mail interface

I am not really familiar with opensmtpd
