Re: once we sort out bug 393445 - err that bug has been sitting open for >3.5 years, last update was over a year ago.

per your referenced message: as suggested in the replies -> busybox

Would it be acceptable to switch over to the busybox version of ping? it is already compiled into busybox, along with ping6 (not in stage3), arping (not in stage3), tftpd (why is it in stage3?).

This would leave only clockdiff, pg3, rarpd, rdisc and tracepath from iputils.

busybox also includes ntpd which is much more common than clockdiff.
busybox also includes traceroute which is much more common than tracepath.

present in stage3 but not used by anything else in stage3:
pg3 is a shell script to send udp packets, I have never even heard of it.
rarpd old reverse arp daemon replaced by BOOTP which was replaced by DHCP.
rdisc router discovery daemon I have never heard of it.

It would seem to just require updating the busybox ebuild dosym to add ping (and any of the others) and then iputils could be dropped now.

I like having ping available when using stage3 but busybox provides one (except for the symlink) already.

you should follow gentoo-dev because the bug is not stale

This bug may not be stale, but bug 393445 appears to be past that point somewhere around fossilized. You had phrased it as "once we sort out bug 393445", I came here from bugzilla not from the mailing list, and translated that into "after 393445 has something happen" then "fix this bug", but 393445 appears to have stalled, while this bug is actually fixable now...

Even if I joined gentoo-dev today I still could not reply to messages from 2-3 days ago and would have to start a new thread.

Bug 393445 is also not stale - it is being discussed in the dev ml.
