Looking to other distributions like Arch or Ubuntu I noticed they are not relying on obsolete gamin/fam for file monitoring and, instead, they are using inotify directly:

This looks then similar to glib-2 case (bug 413403) and, then, we could probably package.use.mask "fam" USE on default/linux/package.use.mask to let linux users use inotify directly without gamin layer
