app-laptop/nvidiabl-0.83::gentoo was built with the following: USE="" ABI_X86="64"
Created attachment 408900 [details, diff] Patch to ebuild This will add the src_prepare clause to patch the source of the nvidiabl driver.
Created attachment 408902 [details, diff] Patch to nvidia-module.c Provides the replacement function strncasecmp for strnicmp for newer kernels.
Patches added.
Looks like someone proposed a patch upstream: https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl/pull/105/files However, that would break for older kernels.
Okay, after doing some additional digging, it appears that the function "strncasecmp" has been availble since kernel 2.6.12, so I think it is safe to say that the #if LINUX_VERSION_COODE condition can be removed and simply use the #define strncasecmd strnicmp instead. So either Gentoo can do this, or Gentoo can take one of the many other patches that exist for this. Another option would be to consider utilizing one of the forks of this driver on github as many of those contain such.
May I kindly ask to drop the stable status for this package and make it ~ unstable again, thanks. my post in forum: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7826686.html#7826686 Summary: ASUSG75VW laptop. Newest nvidia-drivers from portage. Did not build on stable gentoo sources 4.0.5 amd64, and latest unstable 4.2.3 gentoo-sources. used gcc 5.2.0 slot and stable 4.9 slot, hardmasked glibc 2.22 (not wise to downgrade)
CCing treecleaners... or, if anyone wants to proxy maintain this package, please let me know https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Proxy_Maintainers
for now a user of irc nick "JelteF" is working on an ebuild to become proxy maintainer so let's put this on hold.
Created attachment 422854 [details] Ebuild for nvidiabl-0.87 I changed the ebuild to install version 0.87 and added a patch to make it build on 4.x kernels.
Created attachment 422856 [details, diff] Patch for nvidiabl to support 4.x kernels
Created attachment 422860 [details] Ebuild for nvidiabl-0.87 Removed unused variables from ebuild as a final cosmetical tweak. And I'm obviously the JelteF from irc that wants to become proxy maintainer.
Adding to portage with one minor tweak, reducing DESCRIPTION to ONE line. A few minor points that can be changed any time later; 1. RESTRICT="test" is also quite redundant. There is neither a testsuite nor a test phase to restrict so in fact I am taking it out. 2. BUILD_PARAMS BUILD_TARGETS MODULE_NAMES can all be declared local vars. These tweaks don't change the final functionality of the ebuild otherwise I would not make such edits. commit 71c7d7f99ef3db388b58b34c2d0146b20c0a92a8 Author: Ian Delaney <idella4@gentoo.org> Date: Thu Jan 14 10:21:27 2016 +0800 app-laptop/nvidiabl: bump to vn. 0.87, ebuild by maintainer The ebuild has changes of minor style tweaks only from the ebuild submitted via the gentoo bug in Comment 11 in the gentoo bug, namely - reduction of DESCRIPTION to a single line - removal of redundant RESTRICT="test" Gentoo bug: #557422 commit a8856b05df009efec203851683eb7178423ba7db Author: Ian Delaney <idella4@gentoo.org> Date: Thu Jan 14 10:14:21 2016 +0800 app-laptop/nvidiabl: setting Jelte Fennema as proxy maintianer in metadata maintainer offered interest to maintain this via the gentoo bug which also halts the plan to treecelan the package Gentoo bug: #557422
