Description Andrew Udvare 2015-07-13 00:40:45 UTC
Note: This is after initramfs does its work successfully.

Real root /etc/fstab entry:
UUID="BD3B-03BD" /mnt/chuan vfat noatime 0 2

# systemctl status mnt-chuan.mount
● mnt-chuan.mount - /mnt/chuan
   Loaded: loaded (/etc/fstab)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Sun 2015-07-12 17:28:55 PDT; 7min ago
    Where: /mnt/chuan
     What: /dev/disk/by-uuid/BD3B-03BD
     Docs: man:fstab(5)
  Process: 1028 ExecMount=/bin/mount /dev/disk/by-uuid/BD3B-03BD /mnt/chuan -n -t vfat -o noatime (code=exited, status=219/CGROUP)

Log (journalctl):
Jul 12 17:28:55 limelight systemd[1]: Mounting /mnt/chuan...
Jul 12 17:28:55 limelight systemd[1]: mnt-chuan.mount: Mount process exited, code=exited status=219

Jul 12 17:28:55 limelight systemd[1]: Failed to mount /mnt/chuan.
Jul 12 17:28:55 limelight systemd[1]: mnt-chuan.mount: Unit entered failed state.

Workaround is to add nofail to options. Without that, systemd enters into emergency mode. Setting pass to 0 does not make things work either.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have entry in /etc/fstab: UUID="XXXX-XXXX" /mnt/chuan vfat noatime 0 2
2. Boot
Actual Results:
Does not mount.

Expected Results:
Should mount.

systemd-220-r2 worked fine with this line in fstab without nofail.

Comment 1 Alexander Tsoy 2015-07-17 00:40:30 UTC
IIRC this partition contains a key for a LUKS device (bug 551532), thus it should be mounted inside initramfs. Maybe systemd tries to mount it second time after switching root? Could you provide a journal output (e.g. "journalctl -b")?
Comment 2 Andrew Udvare 2015-07-17 03:19:01 UTC
Yes, it is mounted again by real root because it is in my /etc/fstab there. I don't need it to be but I was concerned about unsafe unmounts of the disk due to switch root which just 'quits' (it seems anyway) and leaves the partition in dirty state. The goal of keeping it in my real root's fstab was getting the fsck at least, even if I had to unmount manually afterwards.
Comment 3 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2015-09-07 18:51:38 UTC
Is this still valid with systemd-225?
Comment 4 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2017-04-20 12:35:51 UTC
could you try with a newer version like 233? Thanks
