My server "bobbel" provides two nested exports with nfs3. "/var/share/storage/Video/Film" is a separate mount point for a large disk. I mount those two exports in my /etc/fstab: ================== %< =================== bobbel:/var/share/storage /mnt/san nfs nfsvers=3,bg,hard 0 0 bobbel:/var/share/storage/Video/Film /mnt/san/Video/Film nfs nfsvers=3,bg,hard 0 0 ================== %< =================== Directly after login I can sometimes list the directory content of "/mnt/san/Video/Film", but normally the directory is empty or is immediately empty as soon as I try to access something in it. Actually I access now the (empty) directory of the disk's mount point on the server. Local mount still lists /mnt/san/Video/Film as active mount point, but I can neither unmount it (umount claims nothing is mounted there) nor can I restore the mount - even after restarting netmount/nfsclient. No error shows up in the logs, neither client nor server. When booting with the last stable kernel gentoo-3.17.8-r1, anything is back to normal (as it has been for years). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot with kernel gentoo-3.18.7 2. Mount a nested nfs3 export 3. Access the contents Actual Results: Nested mount point suddenly contains the content of the underlaying mount directory on the server, but not the content of the server's mount. The mount itself is somewhat defunct, because it cannot be unmounted any longer. I've switched server and client to nfs4 and that works.

Another solution is export /var/share/storage with "crossmnt" option, this way all file systems mounted inside this directory tree will be visible. There is no auto-mount involved. Booting with an older kernel is enough to get it working again. BTW: For the (working) nfs4 setup I had explicitly to remove the nohide option to make the nested access work. I'll have a look at the crossmnt option though - it would be fine for the client to mount /storage alone to the nested stuff also.
