fail-clean

sry - but I do compile in tmpfs, no place to keep them around

ok, re-injected the package, here's the log

I hope I don't need to explain the meaning of such error.
Comment 6 Rafał Mużyło 2015-03-02 23:33:52 UTC
BTW, this most likely means that the cause of this bug and bug 541784 is the same.
Comment 7 Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-03-04 09:28:04 UTC
Is it true that your

media-libs/tiff has USE="-jpeg" ?

This may be a missing dependency on tiff[jpeg?]

The error hints most likely at a revdep-rebuild problem - libtiff was built against libjpeg, but afterwards libjpeg got an ABI bump and a rebuild was not triggered.

The question is simply whether was that a bug in the ebuild or an user error.
Comment 9 Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-03-04 14:58:44 UTC
I could be wrong, but it looks like leptonica should depend on

tiff? ( media-libs/tiff[jpeg?] )

instead of

tiff? ( media-libs/tiff )

The situation is just very unlikely to trigger automatically (the reporter seems to run into this in some sort of tinderbox) since you need to explicitly make conflicting choices of tiff[-jpeg] leptonica[jpeg].

Can anybody else reproduce this bug on a system that is in a consistent linking stat?

It happen again and again here at my tinderbox using fresh installed stable/usntable/hardened/ chroot images.

I do just emerge packages via "emerge -1" for 1-2 weeks. After that I throw away that chroot b/c it is "full".

Could you please test if it also happens if you have
media-libs/tiff with USE="jpeg" installed?

Hmpft, I'm unable to reproduce this, even with tiff[-jpeg] leptonica[jpeg]. Weird. If anybody has any insights how to reproduce or fix it...?

..

A trivial checklist:

- check what virtual/jpeg resolves to, post 'emerge -1pv' output of it
- 'ldd -r /usr/lib64/libtiff.so'

Again, given bug 541784, I'm almost certain this problem has very little to do with libtiff.

Do you see a pattern in this tree of duplicates ?
I'm beginning to doubt that "fresh installed stable/usntable/hardened/ chroot images" claim.

I'm unconvinced that these are duplicates...

I cannot reproduce this failure, so I have no means to investigate it. Could you please post which jpeg implementation you're trying to link against?

They're all about missing versioned symbols from libjpeg, so yes, they're duplicates. They're trivial to reproduce: you build libfoo against libjpeg having those symbols, then rebuild libjpeg to a version not having versioned symbols (perhaps jpeg <--> libjpeg-turbo switch or trash in /usr/local). Your libfoo finds libjpeg, but it doesn't have needed symbols.

Yes, I can reproduce this now. If you switch your jpeg implementation without rebuilding tiff, then you run into this. There was a news item in 2012 that suggested that all users change to libjpeg-turbo as the default. I suggest that Toralf patches his tinderbox so as to not switch jpeg implementations.

The problem is that neither revdep-rebuild nor package manager tricks will help you against this. If somebody is interested, please file this as a separate bug, or reopen this one here with a new title.
