Today I just activated that feature again (due to few recompiles of Thunderbird and Firefox in a row).
While looking at it I realized that discrepancy.

aaand it's messier than that

older versions had no limit

not sure why the portage docs say 2GB at all ... it has since since at least 2005, and from looking at older 1.x history, i'm not seeing it being any different.

at any rate, i've tweaked the docs to tell people to refer to the ccache docs for more information:
