Created attachment 390036 [details, diff] vlc-2.1.0-alsa-stuttering.patch All versions about 2.0.x are unable to play certain TS format. I tried all currently available versions (2.1.2-2.1.5) in the tree with no success. I found that this is an upstream bug, the details are logged here: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/10422 I've reverted the patch and adjusted it for 2.1.5 (see attachment). Please keep in mind that might will break systems with pulseaudio but there is no better solution yet. Hmm.. not sure about consequences of such change. Upstream developers said that this is not an option, so I am a little worried, that this patch may have impact on something more than pulseaudio. Could you paste your vlc USE flags?
as a potential option we can add enable the patch with the "alsa" flag only. Since this patch may impact other components, would it be possible to add eptach_user support to the ebuild? It's a pain maintaining a modified ebuild just to apply this patch.

Ebuilds with epatch_user should be available soon. As a workaround, you could also try solution from upstream bug's comment: "I've found out that changing the value in Preferences>Input/codecs>Advanced>File caching helps. I set it to 1000, but I assume it just needs to be set to something greater than what the ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR error reports."

Setting file caching to 1000 helps initially but the ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR error value keeps increasing as playback progresses, making it ineffective.
