Description jackb_guppy 2014-11-15 16:44:43 UTC
Did a "emerge --sync" followed by "emerge -uvD @world", sys-devel/binutils-2.24-r3 fails to compile with "/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/binutils-2.24-r3/work/binutils-2.24/gold/binary.cc:303:1: internal compiler error: Segmentation fault".

Attached tar was made with:
    tar -cvzf error.tar.gz /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/binutils-2.24-r3/

I know that has extra in it, but wanted togather full directory with work/ and temp/ since the Pc in question has C6 processor (yes C6) at 200MHz and 128MB memory. It takes about 4-6 hrs for the error to show.

Either those values are nonsense or you need to adjust your vm settings.

...ah, OK, I've found that snippet hidden among the noise...

You need another machine (a decent one) and a good cross-compiling guide - you're simply running OOM here.
Comment 7 jackb_guppy 2014-11-15 17:19:43 UTC
Machine is an I-Opener C6 processor, 128MB ram, 17GB drive, single USB1 used with USB-10baseT for networking. Been running just fine, until this binutils release. What has changed??

Compilers need more RAM (particularly, more than ~128MB). You probably want to start cross-compiling for that target system. (Also: adding swap will not help.)
Comment 9 jackb_guppy 2014-11-17 23:03:43 UTC
You support 486 systems - so you can no longer gen a 486 system on 486 system? Then why offer a live-cd/boot CD that allowes for that? I gen'ed the system on this machine C6, 128M,17G, USB1 - becuase of the 486 support and a cd that I could get connected and load it with.

If there is now MINIMUM memory requirement (I have taken -pipe now trying to run leaner) then EMERGE is broken. It should not allow the user to spend 2 days for a gen, knowning in the end it will fail.

Please update your WIKI and support function to correctly help the user to understand the problem insteed of searching for solution and posting bug reports.
