Description Paige Thompson 2014-08-30 22:39:34 UTC
in grub this kernel starts busy box when it cant find /dev/mapper/root,

but with kexec-tools /etc/local.d/kdump.start
#!/bin/bash
kexec -p /boot/kernel-genkernel-recovery-x86_64-3.16.1-gentoo-recovery initrd=/boot/initramfs-genkernel-recovery-x86_64-3.16.1-gentoo-recovery --append="root=/dev/mapper/root single irqpoll maxcpus=1 reset_devices"

check that its loaded, trigger sysrq,

see attached kvm over ip screenshot:

here's a copy and paste of the kdump.start and the kernel output to the serial console:

Comment 9 Paige Thompson 2014-09-05 20:09:42 UTC
yeah so my conclusion is, it's not even trying to load the initrd (initramfs) and it has nothing to do with whether or not you build kexec-tools with or without lzma, the result is the same.... but it would make sense for it to have lzma since it's compressed with xz but I was pretty sure that's the kernel's job. On the other hand, if kexec is not compiled with lzma then how is it even able to uncompress the kernel? It does....

I'm stumped, Yeah this would be really helpful to have, but I guess arguably not necesarry since I don't HAVE to use LUKS and I don't HAVE to use LVM and I don't HAVE compile my drivers as modules, it just so happens that is the case though and I find it hard to believe the liklihood that initrd "just can't work" because so many people use lvm and the likes...

But yeah it looks like the issue is that it's not even loading the initramfs for some reason. Any ideas?
Comment 10 Paige Thompson 2014-09-05 20:18:25 UTC
also I tested the recovery kernel does boot correctly from grub and the initramfs is loaded correctly, so it must be something that kexec is doing or is not doing right?

also: tried ~amd64 (2.0.7) and ** (-9999) same thing.

mmh, doesn't look good. I will try to figure out, what happens.
