you are running 32-bit gcc which only has access to 3 GB RAM. try disabling -pipe, and obviously -j8, and try again. if that does not work, you will have to compile using 64-bit gcc.
Hmm PAE and high memory support in kernel should get aroung the 3GB-limitation (which is actually present) and "-j" just sets the amount of parallel compilations but I'll give it a try.
Disabling pipe and -j didn't change anything but switching to sys-devel/gcc-4.8.3 worked fine. Seems like they've reduced the amount of compile time memory.
