Current one, 0.990.400 is buggy.

I have the same problem with gscan2pdf 1.2.3 (not in Portage, but it shouldn't matter).

# with 0.9904
Invalid version format (non-numeric data) at /usr/bin/gscan2pdf line 86.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/gscan2pdf line 86.

# with 0.9908
# works

Indeed, as stated in that bug, it seems to be a problem related to LC_NUMERIC.
# with 0.9904 and LC_NUMERIC=C
# works
