I cannot reproduce this, and I am using the same versions of autotools. Can you please try with MAKEOPTS="-j1"?
I tried rebuilding gnutls 5 times with -j9, it did not fail src_prepare or any other phase, so rebuilding with -j1 seems pointless. Not sure why exactly this bug happened and will it happen again or not.
