Description Arrigo Marchiori 2014-01-04 19:49:45 UTC
When emerging app-text/wdiff, the process hangs in the "configure" script.
The blocking "conftest" process must be killed, to allow the compilation to go on.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
emerge app-text/wdiff

Actual Results:
[...]
checking whether mbrtowc returns 0 when parsing a NUL character... guessing yes
checking whether mbrtowc handles incomplete characters... (cached) guessing yes
checking whether mbrtowc works as well as mbtowc... (cached) guessing yes
checking whether YESEXPR works... yes
checking whether readlink signature is correct... yes
checking whether readlink handles trailing slash correctly... yes
checking for working re_compile_pattern...

And the process hangs here.

Killing the "conftest" process from another shell allows the compilation to continue.

Expected Results:
The emerge process should not stop.

Hello Jeroen,

thank you for taking care of this bug.

IMHO, however, this is not related in any way to NVIDIA drivers:

 - among the installed ebuilds, none contains the word "nvidia";
 - there is no "nvidia.ko" module loaded;
 - none of the peripherals listed by lspci seem to be made by NVIDIA.

I hope this helps. :-)
I am not touching the status of this bug, I am leaving this decision to you.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information.
Comment 3 Tom Wijsman (TomWij) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-01-07 00:54:26 UTC
Can you tell us what you do have?

 - Which video card?
 - Which driver?
 - What is the state of the hung process?
 - Can you reproduce the sigprocmask results from bug #487558?
 - What do you see if you strace and ltrace the hung process?
 - Can you try to see if you can get a backtrace of conftest? (*)
 - When did you started experiencing this?
 - Can we see enough of the last lines of `genlop -l` or `qlop -l`?

(genlop is from app-portage/genlop, qlop from app-portage/portage-utils)

Thank you in advance.

Can you also attach your `dmesg` and kernel .config in addition to the above?
Comment 5 Arrigo Marchiori 2014-01-07 09:15:24 UTC
Hello,

after I rebooted (kernel updated to version 3.10.25) the problem disappeared.

I tried to revert to kernel 3.10.17 but it had no effect.

I am sorry, I cannot reproduce this problem myself anymore. I will check my RAM later...

To answer Tom's questions: this is a headless box, powered by an Atom processor. No X installed.

Sorry for the noise and thank you for following this report.
