This is quite likely a duplicate of bug #487558
I think you are right. I just booted with kernel 3.12.5. Tried to emerge grep, and if failed. I then logged out of X (using xfce4), and tried the emerge in a tty window. That had a very brief hiccup at the same place where it stopped inside X, but then continued and finished the emerge.
