Description ta2002 2013-10-26 01:22:24 UTC
This is very frustrating when trying to track down why portage is doing something.

Attempting an upgrade:

# emerge -Dp thunar

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by net-wireless/irda-utils-0.9.18-r3
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)

But net-wireless/irda has nothing to do with this:

# emerge -Dp irda-utils

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] net-wireless/irda-utils-0.9.18-r3 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Try tree mode:

# emerge -Dpt thunar

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

=dev-libs/glib-2.36.4-r1 ~x86

This indicates the dependency comes from libxfce4util, but there is nothing there either.

It turns out (not a surprise) that the dependency comes from the one unstable package in there (gnome-base/gvfs - the dependencies required by the gdu USE flag make any version that requires gdu a complete non-starter).

So why can't portage say that dev-libs/glib-2.36.4-r1 is required by gnome-base/gvfs-1.14.2? Listing dependencies seems like one of the most basic functions of portage.
